Official photographer of the Crimes of Minds project
Awouell, who also goes by the nickname Awll, has been a reporter and
photographer for several months. Her heavily artistic approach gives a contrasting style that lends an air of authenticity to her photographs. This thirtysomething self-taught artist has an
innate ability to extract the original from the everyday and the beautiful from the ugly. Undergrowth, derelict buildings, faces - no matter what subject is captured by her lens, the poetry and
candour of her photos gives them a kind of second wave, a timeless, yet eminently palpable spark, so that you almost expect to hear the rustle of leaves, the bustle of a harbour, or the laughter
of children.
She converts the so-often invisible images of daily life into a bottomless
pit of humanity and richness, which bathes the audience in a new light, encouraging us to see the delicacy and precariousness of a single moment in time. Awouell’s photos are like the pseudonym
she chose for herself - they immediately catch your attention but afterwards linger long in the mind.
